“Man is a rope tied between beast and artificial intelligence. A rope over an abyss.”
(Loosely based on Friedrich Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra.)
Nora lives in an idyllic village, safeguarded by machines, free from disease—a final bastion of humanity, surrounded by wilderness. But when she crosses the boundaries of her world, she realizes that her life is part of a vast experiment. The only path to freedom and self-determination lies in escaping from her supposed protector.

Frank leads an extraordinary life. He wakes up in unfamiliar cities, in unfamiliar beds, next to unfamiliar women. After a few weeks, he moves on, leaving everything behind. He must inevitably lose every person, possession, and hope of familiarity. All Frank is left with are his experiences and the theory of a physicist that seems to explain his fate. This is the story of the loneliest man in the world, who seeks only one thing: a community of fellow travelers!
Background:
The idea for the novel was born during one of the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. The events of recent years brought a pressing issue to the forefront: loneliness in our society. In an interview, psychiatrist Manfred Spitzer explained: Large studies from 2010 and 2015 show that chronic loneliness carries a greater risk of death than smoking 15 cigarettes a day. “Das Stoffuniversum” takes the concept of loneliness – and its overcoming – to the extreme.
